We also spend a day exploring the enchanting island of Capri.

Sorrento is a popular coastal resort with plenty of shops and amenities. Excellent transport links make this an ideal base to explore the whole peninsula.

Classic Walking & Sightseeing Programme

On these holidays there is a choice of two guided walks for varying abilities each day. For maximum choice we offer two weekly itineraries - ideal if you wish to book a 14-night holiday or return to the area for a second week. ITINERARY ONE Weeks of 10, 24 April; 22 May; 5 June; 11, 25 Sept; 9 Oct 2009. Day 1: arrival day

Day 2: explore Sorrento before walking to St Agata and descending through groves of lemons and olives. Day 3: take a full day excursion to Vesuvius and the remarkable buried city of Herculaneum. Day 4: follow a superb high-level path above the coast before descending to the chic resort of Positano. Day 5: free day - perhaps take the train to Pompei or Naples. Day 6: discover the magical island of Capri visiting Emperor Tiberius' villa and absorbing the magnificent coastline. Day 7: soak up the endless sea views on a walk to Point Campanella at the tip of the peninsula. Day 8: departure day   ITINERARY TWO Weeks of 3, 17 April; 1, 15, 29 May; 4 Sept; 2, 16 Oct 2009. Day 1: arrival day Day 2: visit Sorrento and then walk through lemon groves from Massa Lubrense to Punta del Capo. Day 3: a guided tour of Pompei, buried by volcanic ash in AD79, offers a fascinating insight into Roman life. Day 4: follow the Amalfi Drive to Amalfi and Ravello where a network of paths climbs steeply from the sea to picturesque chapels and viewpoints. Day 5: free day - perhaps visit Herculaneum, the island of Ischia or the superbly preserved Greek temples at Paestum. Day 6: a day on Capri to enjoy spectacular cliff-top walks to the village of Anacapri. Day 7: take the cable car to Monte Faito for panoramic walks through fine mountain scenery. Day 8: departure day

Please Note: The above programme should give you a good feel for the walks at this resort but is subject to change. Each year we listen carefully to the views of our guests and make improvements to our walking programmes. Further information will be sent to you prior to your holiday; however the final selection of walks will be made by your walking leaders.

Local transport to and from walks:
Local transport is not included in the cost of your holiday. Please allow €95 (approx £76) per week for local transport (payable locally in Euros), excluding your free day.

Sightseeing admissions and guide, please allow €25 (approx £17) per week. Admission is free to state owned sites for EU citizens aged 65+; a passport (or a photocopy) normally needs to be shown.

Maps
Your leaders will use a number of different maps and guidebooks whilst in Sorrento. Should you wish to buy a map for your own enjoyment we would recommend the Kompass 1:50,000 map of the Sorrento Peninsula, which covers most of the walks, and the Kompass 1:7,500 map of Capri. Footpath information

	Easier Walks: 3 to 7 miles on good, but sometimes steep, paths. 300ft to 1,000ft of ascent.
	Harder Walks: 4 to 9 miles with some long steep ascents and descents, sometimes on stone steps. 300ft to 1,950ft of ascent.

Transfer from airport - If you book this holiday 'with flight' you will arrive at Naples airport. The onward journey to Sorrento by coach takes around 1¼ hours.

By Air: Naples Airport is served by a number of scheduled and charter flights from the UK and the rest of Europe. If you are booking your own 'low cost' flight then you could consider one of these options:

Transfer to the Hotel Caravel:
Our Airport Hoppa service operates at this resort, offering quick and easy transfers for guests booking their own flights. All prices are per person for single journeys, allowing you to mix and match different transfer options. Transfers must be pre-booked no later than 5 weeks before departure - we will then confirm all the details approximately 3 weeks before your holiday.

From Naples Airport

Direct transfer coaches - leave from Terminal 1.

Direct buses from the Airport to San Agnello are operated by 'Curreri Viaggi'. There are currently 6 buses per day (every 1½ hours) with the journey taking about 1 hour. By Train: Main line trains will take you as far as Naples. For train times and further information visit the Italian railways website: www.trenitalia.com

From Naples you should take the narrow gauge 'Circumvesuviana' railway. Trains depart from a separate station in Naples which lies adjacent to the main railway station. Trains run every 30 minutes and take about 50 minutes to reach San Agnello. Train timetables can be found at www.sorrentoservice.com/eng (click on 'timetable' then on 'local train')

Alight at Sant Agnello station, the penultimate stop before the terminus at Sorrento. The Hotel Caravel is a 10-15 minute walk from the station; alternatively taxis are available.
