Combining visits to China's main historic sites with a selection of walks amidst the stunning limestone peaks of the Yangshuo countryside, and city sightseeing in Hong Kong, this holiday offers a memorable insight into both ancient and modern China.

Day 1: Depart UK |
|
Days 2-5: Arrival in the great imperial city of Beijing (4 nights) where we visit Tiananmen Square, the
Forbidden City and Jingshan Park. We can also walk
around Kunming Lake to the Summer Palace and
travel to the quieter Jinshanling area of the Great
Wall for an exhilarating walk on this historic site. |
Days 6-7: Flight to Xian (2 nights) with visits to the
ancient city walls and Big Goose Pagoda. The
highlight of our stay is a visit to the vast burial place
of the Terracotta Army - 7,000 individually craftedlife-sized figures, complete with chariots and horses.
Day 8: Fly via Kunming to the timeless old town of Lijiang (1 night).
Day 9: We commence our walk through the amazing
Tiger Leaping Gorge with an overnight stop at the
Tea Horse Guesthouse. This walk is considered to
be one of the best in China.
Days 10-11:
Another great day of panoramic
mountain views as we complete our trek and return
to Lijiang (2 nights) where we visit the picturesqueold town.
Days 12-13: Continue to Guilin (2 nights), one of the
most famous landscapes in China, for walks in the
hill terraces of the Lonji Mountains.
Days 14-15:
Cruise along the Li River to Yangshuo (2 nights) where we walk to a mountain retreat and
explore this unique landscape of limestone peaks
and patterns of inter-connecting rice fields. During
our stay in Yangshou, there will be the opportunity
(weather conditions permitting) to attend an outdoor
performance of ‘Liu San Jie’ - an outstanding
theatrical production of a traditional Chinese love
story - including over 600 performers in a light,
sound and dance spectacular in the natural setting
of the Li River and surrounding mountains.
Day 16: Walk to a local farming village before
returning to Guilin and our flight to Hong Kong (2 nights).
Day 17:
Enjoy a walk with spectacular views on Hong Kong Island.
Day 18: Free day for sightseeing, with options to
cross on the famous Star Ferry to Kowloon or visit
Victoria Peak for spectacular harbour views, before
our evening flight to the UK.
Day 19: Arrive UK.

The first part of the holiday is primarily sightseeing, with short walks to the main places of interest. The
second part of the tour offers full and half-day walks in the Guilin and Yangshuo areas of Southern China.

Distances are generally between 2 and 8 miles. Ascents range from virtually nil up to
1,900ft. The itinerary will also include evening cultural and theatrical shows in Beijing and Xian |
